Martin appears on Griffiths valuation as leasing 32 acres from the earl of bessborough, which is a title of Irish peerage which was held by the brabazon ponsonby family.

Children of martin curran and anne Nolan were as follows:

Notes for francis curran
i may be wrong but i believe that my great grandfather, this man was from sliguff, and that he may have moved to the house in drumfea. His brother martin was the last man standing(curran wise) in sliguff, martin is buried in the curran plot at drumfea, and from what i have seen of the censii of 1901 and 1911 alicia curran was present in sliguff in 1901, i think that she was from ballon, as she is seen in 1911, with what appear to be her brothers and sisters living their (in ballon)

francis curran is seen as godfather on a parish record for early feb 1843
Francis(child) Edwd Heary(father) & Bridget Walsh(mother) Francis Curran(godfather) Alice Nolan,(godmother) Drumsk--
http://www.igp-web.com/carlow/Myshall_bap_01.htm

francis was also the sponsor with his sister anna for his brother johns daughter mary in 1851

on the birth certificate of his daughter sarah, he was illiterate, but three years later on the birth cert of his son james he signed his name.

Children of francis curran and sarah doyle were as follows:
+    14        i           martin3 curran, born 14 Oct 1862; christened 19 Oct 1862; died 24 May 1947 in hospice in harolds cross dublin; buried in glasnevin cemetary dublin nh172.5.  He married (1) margaret doyle; (2) margaret gaul.
15        ii          anne3 curran, christened 30 Jan 1857 in drumfea, died 4 Dec 1884, buried in drumphea cemetery county carlow.   Notes: there is a discrepency at the moment with dates on the gravestone in drumphea it says that she was born in 1860, though ac told me he had a record of baptism for her for 30/10/1856. It also says she died at 24years, and just 23 days after her brother patrick who (according to the grave in drumphea)was 17 at his time of death
16        iii         mary3 curran, christened 4 Nov 1858 in drumphea, died 27 Apr 1889, buried in drumphea cemetery county carlow.   Notes: marys sponsors at her christening were peter doyle(not ggf) and margaret fitzgerald. both of these individuals lived in drumphea. another discrepency with the drumphea grave, was that it states that she was born in1862, when in fact she was born five years earlier in 1858.
17        iv         sarah3 curran, born 28 febuary 1865 in drumphea; christened 12 Mar 1865 in drumphea; died 17 Sep 1933; buried in drumphea.   Notes: sponsors at sarahs christening james kehoe and bridget o'hara, her father is referred to as frank, the spelling on sarah for her and her mother is saragh, though this could just be the P.P's misconception. o'haras are a family in drumphea.
      18        v          james3 curran, christened 23 febuary 1868, died 27 May 1948, buried in drumphea.
19        vi         patrick3 curran, born 27 febuary 1870 in birth cert written in carlow town; christened 6 Mar 1870; died 4 Apr 1889; buried in drumphea cemetery county carlow.   Notes: another one with date discrepencies, his birth cert says he was born in 1870, the grave in drumphea says that he died 1889 he would have been 18 though it says 17 on the stone. i get the idea that maybe the grave was an unmarked one and that maybe the information that was put on the stone on a later date, was maybe slightly misinformed, as there are about three discrepencie on it, also i would like to know why this lad died when he was 17, and only 23 days before his sister mary who was only 24
+    20        vii        peter3 curran, born 1 febuary 1872 in drumphea; christened 21 january 1872 discrepent to dob though confirmed in drumphea; died 11 May 1929 in possibly bunclody?; buried in bunclody.  He married anne sinnott.
21        viii       bridget3 curran, born 14 May 1875 in drumphea; christened 31/1/1875 in drumphea; died 12 Jan 1963; buried in drumphea.   Notes: bridget was 3 1/2 months old when she was christened, her sponsors were peter and kate fox, the foxs' were a druphea fanily.
22        ix         john3 curran, born 12 Jan 1877 in birth cert written in carlow town; christened 11 Apr 1877; died died young; buried in drumphea cemetery county carlow.   Notes: says on gravestone drumphae that he died young?
      23        x          thomas3 curran, died died young.
+    24        xi         francis3 curran, born abt 1866; died 15 Oct 1930; buried in druphea cemetery co.carlow.  He married winifred dowling.
+    25        xii        catherine3 curran, born abt 1856; died 15 May 1929; buried in st patricks cemetry vernon county wisconsin.  She married (---) michael ralph.

5. john2 curran (martin1), born 1808; died 1881; buried in glasnevin cemetary dublin wd85 1/2.  He married sarah moore, born 1831; died 7 Aug 1875; buried in glasnevin cemetary dublin wd85 1/2.

Notes for john curran
John curran was the brother of francis curran and had moved up to dublin at least in 1865 as he had buried one of his children at that time in glasnevin.

I was also told by my dad that my uncle frank and himself had a friendly fraternal relationship. his wife mary was born in dublin sponsors at martins christening were thomas fitzgerald and margaret?

6. mary2 curran (martin1).  She married thomas fitzgerald, christened in drumphea?.

Notes for patrick curran
found this guy initially on the parish baptismal records as a sponsor for a doyle child in drumphea, the child, ellen was the daughter of david d and mary byrne(possibly another drumphea family, though in 1911 there was only one byrne individual in drumphea)

      MARRIAGE:

ask ac what divisions he served in and when

12a richmond avenue from 1910 to 1917  the 1911 census and that he had my dad when he was there, dad was born in 1917, after that he moved up to the thatch in whitehall from 1922 to 1935(where thatch road is now)  and then up to santry park in cloughran co dublin.from 1935 onward.

i know from the 1901 census that he didn't live in richmond avenue, and i also maybe know that francis his eldest son may have been born on the southside of dublin somewhere.
he lived in 6 richmond row dublin 8 , he lived there during franks christening in 1897, in the 1901 census he lived iat 23 eastwall d3, and also wharf road, which doe'snt seem to exist in dublin even in 1901, but my father described the area as east wall road in dublin 3.

Notes for margaret gaul
there seems to have been much confusion as to wherher margarets surname was gall ot gaul, so now it is confirmed with her birth certificate as gaul. gaul is not an unusual name in the southeast of ireland at the time, it is said that they came to ireland whilst fleeing from the romans after the assasination of julius caesar, i don't know my history, but they had something to do with it, also i think, gaul is the surname of the royal family in luxembourg, and settled nearly exclusively in counties wexford and carlow

Children of martin curran and margaret doyle were as follows:

38        ii          alfred4 curran, born 12 Apr 1912 in holles street hospital dublin; died 2 Aug 2000; buried in glasnevin cemetery dublin 9 ireland in the cremated plot just by gate.  He married mary (---), died 12 Jun 2001, buried in darderstown cemetery, nth county dublin ireland.

Children of martin curran and margaret gaul were as follows:
+    43        i           francis jj4 curran, born 16 Nov 1894; christened 8 Dec 1894 in st davins church; died 14 Oct 1940; buried in glasnevin cemetary dublin jl291 1/2.  He married eileen (---).

45        iii         sarah4 curran.  She married john bair.   Notes: sarah like her sister mary moved to london and then onto saskatchewan. She married a metis(mixed race) cree native american who seemed to go under a number of names. the one confirmation that can be said is that charles dent    , ivors brother, the shop keeper in prince albert, used to spend alot of time with his auntie bear, because his dad lionel didn't want a kid around the shop.
      46        iv         bridget4 curran.
      47        v          john4 curran.
      48        vi         thomas4 curran.

20. peter3 curran (francis2, martin1), born 1 febuary 1872 in drumphea; christened 21 january 1872 discrepent to dob though confirmed in drumphea; died 11 May 1929 in possibly bunclody?; buried in bunclody.  He married abt 1910 anne sinnott, born abt 1889 in dublin; died 21 Mar 1966; buried in bunclody old cemetery wexford.

Notes for peter curran
my brother andrew was pointed toward peters grave many years ago. but i found him on 1911 census for newtownbarry, and that he was an engine driver.
i think that alot of these curran sibligs were registered civilly quite a time after they were christened, the one reason that comes into my head for this is that they just lived a long way from the civil register office, and that they went when someone was going into town. another reason is that maybe in those hard times, they gave there young ones a chance to survive a while, so to speak.
peter, is another person, named on the drumphea grave, but not actually buried in it.
sponsors at peters christening,  nicholas and mary troy. the troys are another family in drumphea.

Notes for anne sinnott
says on her gravestone that she was from 22 bolton street dublin

24. francis3 curran (francis2, martin1), born abt 1866; died 15 Oct 1930; buried in druphea cemetery co.carlow.  He married abt 1907 winifred dowling, born abt 1879; died 23 Jan 1921; buried in drumphea.

Notes for francis curran
Francis curran is put down as the head of household in the house in drumphea, so.carlow in the 1901 census along with james mary and bridget.
I know also by looking at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/IRL-CARLOW/2001-01/0979763788 that francis curran was still head of household in the 1911 census for drumphea. But don't know who he lived with then.
i also find reference to possibly francis' son on this link(quite a funny part of the story referring to him)
http://www.hoganstand.com/general/Identity/extras/weather/stories/snowb.htm

Children of francis curran and winifred dowling were as follows:
      55        i           francis4 curran, born abt 1908; died 11 Jun 1992; buried in drumphea.

25. catherine3 curran (francis2, martin1), born abt 1856; died 15 May 1929; buried in st patricks cemetry vernon county wisconsin.  She married on 3 Dec 1876 in somewhere in clonegal  michael ralph, born abt 1837; died abt 1914; buried in st patricks cemetry vernon county wisconsin USA.

Notes for catherine curran
in a conversation with my father he said that he had an aunt called catherine who had moved to the USA and had married a man by the surname of ralph, there appears to be quite a few references to her in documents which i shall add in time.there is proof that this is the lady because on the grave of her brother in francis, it refers to her as dying in the usa in 1929.
After further research, i found that they lived in a place called greenwood in vernon county wisconsin, they did move there because michael ralphs(her husband) brother lived here and they went to start a new life. i contacted the historical society in vernon county and for $30 they gave me quite a lot more detail about the ralphs' life.
herself and michael ralph, a man from literally across the road from my grandmother margaret doyle, they would have definitely known one another, ralph was from bunnagurra.

Notes for mary m curran
Mary was born in ireland and moved to london sometime after the 1911 census(she was 18 then) I have been told she was a "clippy" on the london buses as was her older sister, sarah. during the first world war, they got wind of a ship of canadian soldiers coming into southampton, and they went down to "welcome" them, anyway she met her future husband charles this way, and then emigrated to canada sometime pre 1920 and settled in prince albert, saskatchewan, had 6 kids.
in canada marys middle name is reffered to as elizabeth, but on the 1911 dublin census she is refered as  mary m.

  1. Hi Peter, I don't know if you remember we were in contact some years ago about a John Curran b c 1820, you seemed to think you were missing one from that era? I wondered if you have managed to find anything more? Am I right in thinking that you thought 'my' John could be the son of Martin and Anne Nolan, born between Francis and Martin? I'm afraid I have not yet found anything further but I am just in contact with a chap in Seattle who is linked through John's son Michael. I'm awaiting further contact to see if he knows anything more.
